I completely agree. It's stunning to see an American government so brazenly and openly murder civilians on the high seas. It's equally appalling to hear Trump talk about regime change for a country that has a terrible government but does not threaten us.
After the boat strike in which 2 survivors were killed, there was a subsequent boat strike where the survivors were rescued and returned to their native countries. That was an admission that if they had been arrested for drug smuggling, brought back to the US to be tried in criminal court, there was not enough evidence to get a conviction.
Great post, Ryan. You show, point by point, the block-headed muddle from which the Administration's impulsive, hypocritical, and, it appears, criminal course of action is proceeding. This is the same Administration and Defense Secretary which for kicks have displayed on social media, the videos of missiles destroying those Venezuelan speedboats, but which resist release of the one that depicts the killing of the survivors in the water. This presidency is a terrible and painful chapter in the American saga.
Roger, I could not agree with you more. They gleefully boast about blowing up....smalll speedboats? It's like Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem preening in front of the prisoners locked up in cages in the awful prison in El Salvador. They are high officials but they do not have a moral compass. Ryan
Wow, mind blowing. I was totally distracted. Moving the USS Gerald Ford out of the Mediterranean and away from Russia. Trump and Putin are swapping land for land. Venezuela for Ukraine.
Yes! Another reader suggested that Trump may think he/the US could get a percentage of Venezuelan oil revenues. Crass and not realistic…but that could be another motive for Trump.
Great question. We know that Marco Rubio has been a hawk on Venezuela and has urged Trump to take a very aggressive approach toward Maduro. Trump is using immigration as an excuse, however. If Trump started to bash Cuban immigrants, as a pretext for pressuring Cuba, that would boomerang against Republicans in Florida. So Trump would not do that. On the other hand, Cuba is still a Communist country, unlike Venezuela, and has a smaller population, so who knows, maybe Trump could take aim at Cuba, too.
It is a moral imperative to resist this corrupt, incompetent and immoral regime. The arc of the moral universe will bend toward justice and one is or is not on the right side.

Excellent post. Who knows what will happen next? Will Trump threaten Cuba? Nicaragua?

Sara, thanks, I hope that Trump will pull back before it is too late. Ryan
